Setting Environment Variables with Spaces in OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)…

For setting the PATH and other environment variables, see here, since it will explain the more appropriate place for them.

Unfortunately, the methods listed in the linked article above don’t work for environment variables with spaces, e.g. MAVEN_OPTS="-Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore=keystore -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword=password".

To set these, the variables have to be configured as launch daemon arguments.  Here is an example of a file I have:

This file can also go in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons instead of /Library/LaunchDaemons, but this is more a matter of philosophy; either location will work.

Setting Environment Variables in OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

I was recently trying to install SQL Developer from Oracle and wanted the LDAP function to work, which would require the application to be aware of my ORACLE_HOME, but I could not get the application to become aware of the environment variable when I launched it from the Launcher or the Dock.

Shell Variables

For environment variables that are only going to be used in the terminal, setting them in the .bash_profile is sufficient.  I’m not totally sure how the OS X shell works, but it seems to only read the .bash_profile (doesn’t seem to read .bashrc etc.), and it reads it every time a new terminal is open.

Example

PATH=${PATH}:${HOME}/scripts; export PATH

The problem with using the .bash_profile is that applications in the GUI are not aware of the environment variables (e.g. in my case, launching SQL Developer from the command line activated the features I wanted, but clicking the icon from the Launcher did not activate the features).

Environment Variables

There used to be a mechanism for setting environment variables prior to Mountain Lion by setting them in the ${HOME}/.MacOSX/environment.plist file, but this doesn’t seem to work in Mountain Lion.  They have to be set via launchd in /etc/launchd.conf. Unfortunately, this can’t be done at a user level at the moment (${HOME}/.launchd.conf not currently supported), so it must be done at a global level (affects all users).

Path Variables

There is one more way to set the PATH globally for all users. It can be done by adding directories that should be in the path into files under the /etc/paths.d directory.

Go Sputnik!

I recently acquired a brand new Dell XPS 13 after I learned about Project Sputnik, and to say I am extremely pleased with both it and the project would be an understatement.

The Laptop

I am very impressed with the laptop itself, especially compared to other Dells I have owned. The previous 13″ XPS laptop (the M1330) doesn’t even come close, and I might even prefer this over my MacBook Air.

• The screen is crisp, bright, and clear, and the bezel is half the thickness of the bezel on my MacBook Air
• The keyboard feels great and has a little more depth than my MacBook Air, which is welcome
• The entire body feels very rigid and solid, probably due to the Gorilla Glass screen and the carbon fiber bottom
• There are only two USB ports (one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0), a Display Port, a headphone jack, and the power jack, but the portability of the laptop is definitely worth it
• The touchpad is glass, but feels more like “sea glass” compared to the MacBook Air; it will be up to the user whether or not this “stickier” feel is welcome

Regarding the specs, the laptop has the latest 1.7GHz Core i7, 4GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.  The whole system is extremely responsive, and the Windows 7 Home Professional that came with the machine boots in under 8 seconds.  The default Sputnik Ubuntu image (without any updates) boots in under 6 seconds.

The Operating System (Ubuntu 12.04)

I know the Unity interface is a little controversial, but I like it.  Compared to Gnome 2, it definitely has the look and features (e.g. the universal search feature, the app switcher, the launcher) to keep up with the latest from Microsoft and Apple.

From what I gather, the only major differences between the Sputnik Ubuntu image and the standard Ubuntu image is that the Sputnik image has additional drivers, tweaks, and repos specifically for the Sputnik XPS 13, as well as a few extra packages listed on the Ubuntu Sputnik site here.  An example of how some of the drivers may be different between the images is that the touchpad did not “tap to click” out of the box with the default Ubuntu image, whereas it did with the Sputnik image.  Everything worked out of the box, including all the Fn key functions, wireless, and suspend, which, as any Linux hobbyist should know, was extremely welcome.  The teams have done some good work here.

The Installation

Installation was as painless as the standard Ubuntu installation has become.  I used usb-creator-gtk as suggested by Ubuntu here.  I read that some people had issues with the installation process wiping the entire hard drive without notice or that the image could not be loaded via the USB 3.0 port on the right side of the laptop, but I was offered all the standard partitioning choices and ran the entire installation from the USB 3.0 port without issue.

The only issue I encountered after installation was that an apt-get update would not work immediately.  I first had to comment out the extra repos in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, run the update, then run the update again with the extra repos uncommented, after which everything worked perfectly.

Performance

I don’t think Google’s new Octane benchmark is a comprehensive performance benchmark for an entire system by any means, but it is quick and may be meaningful for the casual web browsing user.  For comparison’s sake, here are the scores for three machines I had available:

• Early 2010 MacBook Air (2.13 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 320M): 4442
• Dell E6410 (2.4 GHz Core i5, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA NVS 3100M): 6172
• Dell Sputnik XPS 13 (1.7 GHz Core i7, 4GB RAM, Intel HD 3000): 6509
